This roster has talent, no question, but I think what's made it function together as a whole unit so well is the overall IQ of the players on this team. You can go through each unit, and after hearing them talk, you get the impression that they would be great coaches. They know their stuff! Tate Romney, father of 2, is at the top of that list! And then, when you add Ethan Wesloski and Isaiah Chisom next to him, there's not a whole lot that's going to get past them. They help get and keep things organized. Then, when/if they get a visual cue, they can make a sight adjustment on the front or whatever it may be, similar to the same freedom that Drew Mestemaker has at QB. Of note, I think the "finishing" piece for Tate has improved remarkably over the last 3 games. Being out as long as he was, there was always going to be some rust to knock off. So, to see how fast he mentally processes and diagnoses plays post-snap, even if he is older, is super impressive. Now, having added the finishing piece has made him a really good player. As a coach, watching his details like first step, eye discipline, chasing pullers, angles, the way he rips through trash, and the way he layers when he's on the backside of a play are all very clinical. If you're an Xs and Os type person, he's one you want to watch. Which is why I got kinda into the Xs and Os weeds with him in this interview. #GoPokes #OkState

Also, put them toward the top when it comes to knowing what they're good at and then playing to their strengths. Kudos to Coach Morris and Coach Crill for building the scheme around execution and focusing on the skill sets of the players. Ashton Lepo, at right tackle, has seen just about everything that college football has to offer. And how powerful of a motivator that is. Sometimes you can get some “he said all the right things” during interviews. Not in this program, though. What you see and hear is what you get, and that starts with the head coach and makes its way down to every rotation piece in every unit. So, when a guy like Rigsby tells you how much confidence this gives everyone, or how everyone feels like a starter, or whatever it may be, believe him! How 92 New Players Became a TEAM at Oklahoma State
3rd-down efficiency is always a stat that is very relevant. But to get all the meat off of that bone, in terms of how it applies, it's equally important to analyze what types of 3rd downs the offense sets up for itself. Then, once you do that and you find they're in 3rd and 2 all day, which is a down a good offense is going to win consistently, then you have to analyze why they're getting into 3rd and 2 so consistently. And usually, the answer is 1st down! Just look at OSU this year, and then look at the offense for UCF last week. Of course, OSU is explosive, but when it's also been consistent, those are the times when they're winning on 1st down. Same with UCF, but just the opposite. They weren't incredibly explosive, so they had to win 1st down, and they did. That's Houston! When they play well, they convert a lot of 3rd downs because they're in yardage situations that favor them. OSU, according to Coach, is gonna have to find a way to disrupt Houston on early downs, get them in more predictable situations, then don't hesitate to bury them once you do. I mean, we're not reinventing the wheel here. It's just football, and while styles between teams might change, certain core principles of winning games don't. #GoPokes #OkState
Eric Morris' Key to Stopping Houston: Win on 1st Down
Coach Morris talks about what Houston does well and what OSU has to do to "stay on schedule." Houston is very good at stopping the run, they have good blitz packages once they get you in passing downs, and they mix it up a lot on the back end. OSU, despite the numbers not being totally awesome, stuck with the run game last week, and that allowed the play action to continue to be a factor. I would imagine Coach Morris will have to have that type of discipline/patience, take your pick on terminology, to keep beating the Houston defense as well. There are multiple ways to be balanced, though. You can run to set up the pass, but you can also pass to set up the run. And those themes don't have to be so rigid that they apply to entire games. Games have ebbs and flows, and the best coaches "feel" those ups and downs and know what they need to do to regain momentum. The "feel" aspect of the way Coach Morris manages an entire game, not just his offensive play-calling, has possibly been the most impressive thing he's done. OSU fans worried that calling plays might make that part of it harder to do. But I have said this before: I think it makes it easier. Because, again, when you're the head coach, the only thing that matters is winning. So every play is called, and every decision is made with that being the only factor. Stats are great, but only if they are the process used to reach the goal of winning. Not if they are the goal in any way. #GoPokes #OkState
