Coach Lutz is a straight shooter in every way possible. So, when he says this team is further along, that we have more length and athleticism, and that this team should be much more balanced, that's exciting. Coach also made the point—and he did NOT mince words—that "IF" this team decides to be a good defensive team, this team will have a "fantastic" season. Another thing I really appreciate is his transparency when it comes to the money spent on this roster compared to past rosters. He has been very clear that more money was spent on this year's roster, and because of that, the expectations have been raised to match it. He thinks this team has every piece it needs to be a good defensive team, but it's still wired to be more of a "scoring" team. With the length of our perimeter players—and really, the overall length of this roster—Coach also thinks this should be a good half-court team. But he says the bread and butter will still be getting out in transition. For that to happen, the defense and rebounding have to substantially improve. You can't get into transition if you can't retrieve the misses and get the outlet. It's hard to consistently beat the other team down the court in transition off made baskets. Can't wait. Coach has built a very good roster, and I think this is the first year where we'll really see his personality become the driving force behind the style of play we'll see. He's tough, upfront, honest, gritty, super competitive, and confident. The kids just have to follow that lead, and I think we'll be very happy with the product. #GoPokes #OkState #SteveLutz

There's a common thought that the more a team throws at you, the less you can do. The point is, their goal, for the most part, is to get their opponent spending all their time trying to figure out how to line up, leaving them no time to work on their own fundamentals and details. So, to avoid that, simplifying can be the answer to all the eye candy and help avoid mistakes on the organizational side of things. Coach Morris said he believes in some of that, but he prefers to build a scheme that allows his offense to account for everything the opponent does. That way, it's built in, and the thought process becomes part of the routine of the playbook for that week. And if he has too much in for that week, and it's causing too much thinking and keeping his offense from playing fast enough, he cuts out plays and gives his QBs the freedom to be a part of that process. As for the defense, getting lined up properly, then knowing who has QB, RB, and the RPO pass off of that will be key. As Mose Phillips said in our interview, the OSU defenders have to get their eyes in the right spots, trust what they see, then know where their help is at all times. WVU is going to want to get OSU in space, and the better job our defense does at playing with the correct leverage, the more layers they'll be able to use as a blanket. #GoPokes #OkState
