The Cowgirls traveled to Morgantown this past weekend for a showdown between two nationally ranked-clubs. OSU got off to a slow start, never sped back up, and got beat 54-37.
This was a disappointing outcome because the game had so many implications, but the Cowgirls are still in good shape to make the NCAA Tournament and have their Big 12 destiny largely in their own hands.
OSU had just one player score in double-digits, Alexia Smith with 15, and the next highest scorer was Jadyn Wooten with 8. Smith and Wooten are terrific players, but it’s tough for OSU to win any game Heard, Gray, and Asi aren’t scoring.
Heard and Gray had just 7 a piece and Asi did not score.
West Virginia is one of the better defensive teams in the League, and they controlled the game on that side of the ball. They allowed the Cowgirls to shoot just 21% from the floor, and just 2 made 3-point shots.
Both teams entered as top 5 teams in the league in FG% against and were the #2 and #3 teams allowing the fewest 3-pointers. So, it’s no surprise that the game was seemingly played in a phone booth, but, it’s always a surprise when OSU has a game where they never get hot.
Even for a short period!
The Cowgirls shot 25% in the 1st Quarter, 21% in the 2nd Quarter, 20% in the 3rd Quarter, then 20% in the 4th. So, not only was it a struggle, it was consistent throughout the entire day.
OSU scored 6 points in the first 3 minutes of the game, then didn’t score again until almost halfway through the 2nd quarter. The drought was exactly 11 minutes and 7 seconds long, which, for this team, is a shock.
After scoring a couple of buckets in a row, the Cowgirls then scored just 4 points in the last 5:04 of the 1st half. The next time OSU scored was on a 3-pointer from Micah Gray with 8:14 to go in the 3rd to make the score 25-17.
From that point on, the Cowgirls got outscored 16-12 for the rest of the quarter and went into the 4th trailing 41-29.
OSU then made just 1 bucket in the first half of the 4th quarter, and, at that point, the deficit was too big with too little time left.
Enough with the negative though, because, despite Saturday being a “Bowling Shoe Ugly” game, there are far more positives surrounding this team. OSU is still technically in 4th place just 1 game back of Baylor, and is even in the win column with First Place Kansas State.
OSU has the chance to do something about that too!
The Cowgirls host the Lady Cats next Saturday at 2:00 inside Gallagher Iba in what promises to be a huge game. From there, they will likely be favored in most, if not every game for the rest of the season.
