Gut Check Sunday for the Cowboys

The margins are SLIM in College Baseball, much thinner than they ever have been. The days of racking up a roster that is just FAR superior to almost every other College Baseball team are gone. In fact, almost every team is fairly similar in today’s game, because the talent pool is so deep.

Every team has multiple arms that are mid 90’s, where, if you find yourself in a tough spot late in a game, or a series, you very well might lose.

For instance, Central Michigan, a team that the Cowboys swept, have Zac McKinstry, who is currently in the Big Leagues, and Griffin Lockwood Powell, who is in AA. And, the same could be said for likely every other program that traditional fans don’t consider to be huge powers.

Minor League baseball, as I cover on a daily basis, shows you that there are so many great players, from all walks of life and from all different sizes of Colleges. So, when you play College Baseball, you either play well & win, or don’t play as well & lose, regardless the opponent. It’s that simple!

And, we’ve seen that with this OSU team over and over, and with just about every team as well, not just OSU.

So, that brings us to this weekend and the series with K-State. K-State is a good baseball team, they are 24-14 overall & 9-8 in Conference so, this weekend, as well as every weekend was going to be, and has turned out to be a tough weekend. Especially considering the gut punch Tuesday was, then the back to back blows with what happened Friday.  Those back to back gut punches made Saturday tough even for elite competitors, and, point blank it was definitely a tough day.

Then you have these factors: Tyler Wulfert is out & the Cowboys have dealt with injuries up and down their roster. Beau Sylvester has been out for a while now, Aidan Meola has been in and out, and Nolan Schubart is still rounding into form.

Having said that, those are excuses, or reasons, whichever semantics you choose to use. But, regardless, it doesn’t matter, because the bottom line is, this programs HAS to win. And, every player that was recruited to OSU was good enough to get recruited to OSU for a reason, so, no excuses.

This group has to find a way to re-group, and come out on Sunday afternoon and win the 3rd game of this series. Will it put them in 1st place, no. Will it be the final piece to the puzzle to hosting a regional, no. But, what it will do, is show us, once again, just how much pride this team has playing baseball, and doing so for OSU.

So, make no mistake, today is a HUGE game & one that OSU really needs to win.
