The OSU Cowgirls just entered the Top 25, they had completed two very good wins last week, and they were playing a team on Tuesday that hadn’t won a game in Conference play.
Everything looked to be on the up and up, but as they say, you don’t play the game on paper. And, unfortunately, the Cowgirls learned that lesson all too well dropping a disappointing 79-76 decision.
Staillee Heard and Micah Gray both had big games again scoring 17 and 16 respectively, and Anna Gret Asi added 16 as well. Macey Huard also reached double digits checking in with 11, so scoring wasn’t the problem.
It was the defense!
Houston shot 51.9% from the floor overall and made 7 of their 20 3s. They had 19 assists on the night en route to scoring 79 points.
After trading buckets for the most part at the beginning of the game, Houston went on a 6-0 run to go up 8. The Cowgirls responded though by scoring 14 points in the next 3 minutes of game action and took a 3-point lead with 1:19 to go in the 1st quarter.
But, that lead was short-lived as Summer Bostock nailed a 3-pointer for Houston on the next possession to tie the game, which is how the 1st quarter ended.
The 2nd quarter was a struggle for OSU on the offensive end as the Cowgirls scored just 10 points, meanwhile giving up 21 to trail by 11 at the half. In fact, the game was tied at 27-27 with 5:33 to go in the 1st Half when Anna Gret Asi nailed a 3-pointer, but that was the last bucket the Cowgirls would hit, and OSU only scored 1 more point for the remainder of the half.
BYU took advantage by finishing the 1st half on a 12-1 run to take an 11 point lead to intermission.
The lead swelled to as much as 26 for Houston and was still at 18 with 3:54 left in the game. The Cowgirls had a late flurry by scoring 21 points from that point on to and put themselves in position to have a 3-point attempt by Stailee Heard at the buzzer to tie the game. But, that shot didn’t fall, and with the loss, the Cowgirls moved to 14-3 and 4-2 in Conference. Houston is now 5-12 and 1-5 in Big 12 play.
