Saturday was a rough day for the Men’s team on the road in Utah. The Utes scored the first 12 points and never were really threatened by the Cowboys beating OSU 83-62.
Although Utah came in winless in Conference play, that doesn’t mean they’re not talented. They have a ton of size, which proved to be a terrible matchup for OSU and seem to be adjusting to the physical nature of the Big 12.
The Utes blocked 7 OSU shots, had 46 points in the paint, and had a sizable lead the entire game. That can all be explained by the bad matchup in terms of size. But, one of the most disappointing aspects of the game, however, was that Utah had 14 more assists, so, not only did they have the size advantage, but they also passed and shared the ball much better than this OSU team did.
Another disappointing aspect of this game was that OSU made just 12 of their 22 Free Throws (54.5%), and shot just 26% from the 3-point lead. If this team can’t match the size of its opponent, then it needs to share the ball and shoot, neither of which they did on the road Saturday, thus, leading to a lopsided defeat.
There was a somewhat unexpected positive, however. The Pokes rebounded well considering the size disadvantage and actually outrebounded the Utes 40-39. The rebounding was especially good on the offensive glass, but OSU couldn’t turn those 2nd chance opportunities into enough points to keep pace.
To be honest, there are some games where you throw the film in the trash can and move to the next day, yesterday was that game for me.
What’s Next?
The Cowboys will stay over in Utah and drive over to Provo for a road matchup Tuesday night against a good BYU team that will be hungry. BYU is just 10-5, and only 1-3 in Conference play, but they are talented and have a great home court advantage, so this game will be very tough.
