Saturday was a huge win at home for the Cowgirls as they defeated West Virginia, a team that came in nationally ranked at #17. WVU led early, but OSU finished late and overwhelmed the visitors from Morgantown 64-57.
OSU was 23-50 from the field (46%), 6-19 from 3, 12 of 15 from the Free-Throw line, and had 6 blocks and 4 steals. Seven different ladies scored, and the Cowgirls had three double-digit scorers in Heard, Asi, and Gray.
Half-Court Hannon Alert!
The Cowgirls were down by 10 at 38-28, with :56 left in the first half, but then ended the half scoring the last 5 points, highlighted by the Half Court shot at the buzzer from Anna Gret Asi.Asi was the 2nd leading scorer for the Cowgirls and hit several huge shots early to keep West Virginia at arm’s length and throughout the game. Today was the 9th double-digit scoring game for Senior from Estonia & her 5th in her last 7 games.
The Cowgirls are now 14-2 on the season and 4-1 in Conference play. Having beaten a good Cincy team on the road and a nationally ranked team just this week, we’ll see if the ladies climb into the Top 25, but they should!
Scoring and More Scoring
The Cowgirls are 2nd in the Big 12 in scoring at 83 points a game, 4th in defense at allowing just 56 points per game, and 4th in margin of points scored vs. allowed at 27.1 per game. Although OSU does not have an individual in the Top 10 in the League in scoring, Stailee Heard and Micah Gray are back to back at 15 & 16. This group can score, and they can do so in bunches and in just about every way needed, so lots to be excited about.
Stailee Heard led the way again for the Cowgirls scoring 18 points on 7-13 shooting from the floor. She also pulled down 7 boards and made 4 of her 5 free-throw attempts. Heard is 15th in scoring in the League, 4th in rebounding & is 10th in 3-point percentage, so she can flat fill up a stat sheet and there really is no way to describe how valuable she is to this team. Especially the way she likes to take over games in crunch time.
Praise Egharevba had some huge buckets Saturday in the win for the Cowgirls. She had 6 points in total, but it was all about the timing of when she scored and her efficiency in answering the bell when her number was called. She attempted just 2 shots, but made both, then also sank both of her free throws. The 1-2 Combo in the paint of her and Magassa gave the Cowgirls close to a double/double combined from the post. And, the way this team can shoot, if they get that type of production down low, they’re gonna be hard to beat.
Saturday was a really nice effort from Tenin Magassa who was just 1 bucket shy of double-digits and had 6 boards and 5 blocked shots. She also had 3 assists, so the way she impacted the game in the paint, both offensively & defensively, was a huge factor in the huge win Saturday.
Micah Gray was back in double-digits scoring 11 today, which marked her 10th double-digit game this year. She made 3 triples, including the big one to start the 4th quarter that extended the lead to 8, a lead the Cowgirls never gave back.
It’s always exciting to watch the Freshman, Jadyn Wooten use her quickness and athletic ability to impact the game. Wooten has an exciting future, which begins now on a very experienced and very good team.
What’s Next?
The Cowgirls are next in action on Tuesday in Houston to take on the Houston Lady Cougars at 7:00. Houston is 4-12 overall on the season and has yet to win a game in Conference, so this is a good chance to pick up a road win in Conference play, which is never an easy thing to do.
